What is Netiquette?
The short answer is that Netiquette is the correct or acceptable way of communicating on the internet. It is essential that we do not become to numb to screen-names and avatars and remember there is a person with feelings and emotions attached to that online avatar or screen name.
This can almost seem like a ridiculous point to have to reference. After all, people have been told that we should be kind and polite to others since we were in kindergarten, right? The difference here is that in an online environment a computer user has the ability to be anyone or no one as he or she sees fit. The ability to be anonymous can often times provide an environment where users communicate with others in ways that are offensive or inappropriate because they feel a disconnection between their words and repercussions. Below you will find some helpful tips about proper online Netiquette. |

Warnings about Cyber-BulliesIn today’s world having an online presence is as normal for people as it once was to carry a wallet or purse. Whether you’re a 8 or 80, most people in the industrialized world have an online identity. As such it’s important to remember that the online world is essentially just a mirror of the real world. As such the same behaviors and problems one experiences in real life can be obstacles online. For many children, young adults and even elderly people bullying in the real world can be an issue. The same can be true online. The term for such behavior is “cyberbullying”. This term is applied to any person who is bullied with any kind of electronic device, communication tool or on any social media site.

Social MediaSocial Media Etiquette at first glance might sound as though it’s a fairly complex set of rules and procedures one needs to follow while logged onto the internet. The truth is that it’s not much more complex than observing the “Golden Rule” which we all learned in grade school. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Everyone wants to be treated with a certain level of respect and feel like their opinions are respected and valued. People want to be able to have an exchange of ideas which is stimulating, pleasant and most importantly, polite. This is the nuts and bolts of what social media etiquette is all about.
